School’s out

Too cool for school is not typically how you would describe translators. We’re more of a bookish bunch of word nerds with a thirst for knowledge. In any case, I’m a firm believer in life-long learning and I like to learn stuff for the sake of learning. Here are some resources to teach yourself whatever you fancy.

khan academy is a non profit organisation providing free education via a video library on subjects ranging from arithmetics to history and economics. On top of the video lectures, it offers exercises and assessments. You can use the website without signing up (I do), but signing up with a Google or Facebook account allow you to get track of your progress. The videos are typically short (around 15 minutes) and very clear. And they actually have a translation project!

MIT open courseware has been offering free educational material from the famous Massachusetts Institute for Technology for the past 10 years. Courses include sciences and engineering of course, but also humanities and management. If you don’t know where to start, you can always have a look at the editor’s pick.

Sofia is a modeled after the MIT open courseware initiative. It encourages the sharing of community college level material. So far, it has published eight open courses: creative typography, elementary statistics, physical geography, enterprise network security, introduction to Java programming, introduction to macromedia flash, musicianship II and webpage authoring.

SoYouWanna is a fun website, where you can learn practical things like how to dye your own hair or how to play poker and not so practical things like what are the 10 most expensive cities in the US.

Finally, the Open university is well-known as a distance learning institution accessible to all those who wish to learn. It also makes a part of its ressources available free of charge through itunes, youtube and the website openlearn.

That’s it for today. I’m off to learn something new.
